Internet Australia, the peak body representing Internet users, has raised its “serious concerns” at reports that Victoria's Office of the Racing Integrity Commissioner is seeking warrant-free access to the data retention scheme.
“This is just what many people feared”, according to Internet Australia CEO Laurie Patton. “The Data Retention Act only came into effect last month and we are already seeing attempts to widen its reach”.
Internet Service Providers have reacted angrily on learning that the limited government funding to compensate them for the costs of implementing the Data Retention Act will be spit over three years. Internet Australia, the peak body representing Internet users, said today it had only realised this when it was revealed during last week’s Senate Estimates hearings.
Internet Australia CEO, Laurie Patton, commented: “Our ISP members will have to pay upfront for their equipment and salaries, so why should they have to wait to get all their funding from the Government?”

The claim was made tonight during questioning in Senate Estimates.
