Some observations about the $131 million reportedly to be allocated to cover the industry's implementation costs of the Data Retention scheme.
"This is less than half the amount the Government itself estimated as the cost to industry when the Data Retention Bill was presented to Parliament.
The implementation process is still being fine-tuned by the Attorney General's department. The Internet Society and the Communications Alliance are advising the department on how the requirements will impact ISPs. The feedback we are giving them is demonstrating that the Government has greatly underestimated the work involved. Therefore, we believe that it is too early to be capping the amount of money allocated to the industry's cost recovery.
