Statement
Since working as a policy advisor at the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in 2010-2012 in the areas of technology and data governance, I have been keenly aware of the importance of the rights of individuals and civil society in these domains. I have worked in government, higher education, the private and not-for-profit sectors and have seen how important it is to protect digital and civil liberties from overreach as data becomes more valuable.
I have enthusiastically supported many organisations as a volunteer and am committed to continuing to contribute to the community in the best ways that I can. I have strong planning and organisational skills and have developed an extensive network of contacts in the open technology scene in Melbourne. I believe that I would be able to contribute positively to Internet Australia as a board member. Building an inclusive culture in the technology world is an acknowledged problem, as is the lack of women in positions of leadership. I am a proud feminist but am also dedicated to building vibrant, intersectional communities and understand how to operate at a grass-roots level.
I served for three years as a board member of Open Knowledge Australia and was very active in the local Melbourne community. With a group of others, I ran a weekly meetup, which presented a range of activities, ranging from speakers, to workshops to major hackathons. We ran the Melbourne chapter of GovHack, the world’s largest civic hackathon. The Open Knowledge Melbourne group grew to over 1500 members and built strong relationships with other organisations doing similar work in the areas of open data advocacy and civic hacking.
